Dead Fall understand what makes pop punk fun to begin with. Sure, the Kent, Ohio, five-piece's music has all the typical trappings of the genre – big bouncing rhythms, riffs lined with heartstring-tugging lead lines, melodic vocals about dealing with personal shit – but it's how the band combines them that breeds the warmth and familiarity that brought fans to the genre in the first place. Dead Fall's music makes you think of the dudes you know in back rooms and basements you've hung out in, whose stories of anger, confusion, and heartache might as well be your own.
The band's latest video, Drowned Out, from the band's upcoming Never Expected EP, channels this excellently. It's not just that the video features the band playing in a garage (the only true breeding ground for any band worth its salt), but that the video focuses on both the band's performance and the minutiae of the room around them. In between close-ups of old bottles, Christmas lights, aging beams and cheesy tchotchkes, the band members are shadowy and barely lit. The result is a video that looks like a memory, as though combining all of Dead Fall's garage days into an emotional blur of, Man, remember those days?
Of the video, drummer Nick Barker says, "Drowned Out is a song that captures a unique transitional period in my life. After the exit of a long term partner that was deeply ingrained into my every day life, I began to question what was good for me and wonder if the things I had built my life around were true at all. Being the first time I truly experienced this kind of loss and heartbreak, I was forced to come to terms with the fact that people can and will choose to remove you from their lives in an instant when you least expect it. I also got to feel the bond between my friends, family, and I grow stronger than I could have imagined as they supported me through it. In the end, I have come to value both experiences. They’ve helped shape the person I am today, and I couldn’t be happier with myself."
