Gerard Way Will Be Scoring Clerks 3, According To Kevin Smith

While Gerard Way is currently busy working on the fourth volume of his The Umbrella Academy comic book series, it seems as though he's taken on another project, too: scoring the new Clerks 3 movie.

The former MCR frontman-turned-author will reportedly by writing and composing the music for the movie, according to writer and director Kevin Smith. While few details so far have been announced, Kevin reportedly revealed the joining of forces at a Monday roadshow event for his Jay & Silent Bob reboot – according to Slash Film.

Of course, Gee has been involved in music within TV and film before, unveiling covers of Hazy Shade Of Winter (Simon & Garfunkel) and Happy Together (The Turtles) for the Netflix adaptation of The Umbrella Academy with his old bandmate Ray Toro. And we both know how wonderfully they turned out, so this could be very cool indeed.

As for Clerks 3, Kevin recently revealed of the plot: “Randal has a heart attack, decides that he came so close to death, and his life has meant nothing, there’s nobody to memorialise him, he has no family or anything like that. And in the recovery, while under fentanyl, he comes to the conclusion at mid-life, having almost died, having worked in a movie store his whole life and watched other people’s movies, he tells Dante, 'I think we need to make a movie.' So Dante and Randal make Clerks. That’s the story of Clerks 3.”

Speaking to Kerrang! earlier in the year, Gerard said that writing the music for the hugely-successful Netflix adaptation of The Umbrella Academy was similar to that of writing for My Chemical Romance.

“It’s a bit more work, because it’s for something cinematic,” Gerard revealed. “It’s not that it has to reach a higher level, it’s just that it’s a different level. The solo stuff is just kind of up to me, and what I want that to convey, or what nature it has. Whereas with the show, everybody has to really be blown away by it.

“So maybe, in a way, it’s more a little bit of what Ray and I and the guys in My Chem used to do; we apply a little bit more of that to what we do in these cover songs for Umbrella Academy.”

He went on to say that it felt “fresh and exciting” to revisit that kind of creative process.

“It’s actually really nice to go back and do something like you once did it, because you have more experience and wisdom and knowledge. As you get older you bring all these things the way you used to do. It’s refreshing at times – especially if you’re doing a bunch of experimental things. It’s refreshing to go back to your core, and your roots, of what you used to do, and apply your new knowledge to that.”
