Fall Out Boy brought their updated cover of Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start The Fire to mainstream TV last night at the MTV VMAs.
The Chicago pop-punk heroes were nominated on the night for Best Alternative (for Hold Me Like A Grudge, but they lost out to Lana Del Rey featuring Jon Batiste – Candy Necklace) as well as Best Visual Effects (for Love From The Other Side, though Taylor Swift’s Anti-Hero won), and they also delivered a suitably fiery version of their 2023 Billy Joel tribute.
Back in July, the Piano Man himself shared his approval of the band modernising We Didn’t Start The Fire, explaining that, “Everybody has been wanting to know when there is going to be an updated version of it, because my song started in ’49 and ended in ’89 – it was a 40-year span.
“Everybody said, ‘Are you going to do part two? When are you going to do part two?’ And I said, ‘Nah, I’ve already done part one.’ So, Fall Out Boy, go ahead. Great. Take it away.”
