The Kerrang! Chart: The best new music this week
The ultimate new music countdown – every Friday!
It’s happening: from letters in the mail to a brand-new logo, twenty one pilots are officially teasing the next chapter of the band…
As we approach the third anniversary of Scaled And Icy in May, it looks like twenty one pilots are finally about to properly launch their next era as a band!
The Columbus duo – Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun – seem to be gearing up for album number seven in a typically cryptic and unique way, teasing fans with real-life letters and billboards over the past few days, as well as a new digital hint by updating their album artwork with strips of red tape covering all the eyes on each cover on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube etc.
Even more excitingly, these clues also point to fan-favourite twenty one pilots lore, with the aforementioned letters coming from the Sacred Municipality of Dema, and billboards mentioning Clancy (a throwback to 2018 album Trench, as Scaled And Icy mostly saw them stepping away from that narrative).
Check out some of these new teasers below:
Speaking to Kerrang! around the release of Scaled And Icy, Tyler said that he’d already gotten to work on more new twenty one pilots stuff since finishing up that record.
“Usually when we’re done working on a record I feel completely burnt out; I’ve put everything into it that I have, and I’m done with writing, done with music, for however long,” he described. “And on this one, for some reason – maybe it’s because I know that we’re not going to go out and play shows [due to the pandemic] – after finishing it, I didn’t feel that same burnt-out feeling. And I’ve actually continued to create, even after. I’m still writing and excited about music. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing… hopefully it’s just a good thing!”
