twenty one pilots frontman Tyler Joseph looks ahead to the follow-up to 2018's Trench…
Tyler Joseph has already teased that a new twenty one pilots album will be arriving sooner than the duo – completed by drummer Josh Dun – had planned. And while he remains typically tight-lipped about what fans should expect from album number six, he has suggested that there are “two very different records” to be written.
In a new interview with AltPress, the frontman seemingly “isn't interested in reacting” to the uncertainty of the world right now according to the publication, with Tyler stating, “I’m not really sure which direction we’re gonna go yet.”
He clarifies: “There are two very different records, in my opinion, to be written. One being right now and the other one being after that. I don’t know which one I’m going to do first. I have an idea of what I think is next, sonically. It’s just whether or not it’s too big of a risk, I guess.”

As AP then point out that twenty one pilots' career has pretty much been based on risk, Tyler says, “We have more to risk at every step. So it’s still got some weight to it. Each time we make a decision to risk something, we’ve got more to lose. But screw it. That’s what Josh and I always say (laughs).”
Tyler's new comments follow his interview in May in which he revealed, “I’m writing a record right now. I’m not sure when it’ll be released, but it’s definitely going to be really sooner than we were planning on releasing a record.”
Again, addressing the potential direction and if it might follow the storyline of 2018's Trench or go somewhere else entirely, he continued: “I don’t know if it’s this in-between record or if it’s a continuation of the narrative and where we left off. It’s kind of hard for me to tap into the story of Trench and what we’ve been building on up until that point without being out there, without touring, without having those live shows, without interacting with our fans.”
What we do know, though, is that Tyler and Josh don't plan on taking another year-long social media blackout like they did before unveiling Trench.
“I don’t know that there would be a world in which we completely go off the map again,” Josh stated in December last year. “Completely going off the grid was tough for both of us in a lot of ways. We’re both wired to always be wanting to do something that pushes us forward.”
While we eagerly await more updates, the band recently launched a never-ending video for their latest single Level Of Concern – check it out below:
